I removed the countdown tool. It was depressing.
Over at Mark Terry's blog, his post of December 7 dealt with the hook of a story. He listed the hooks of different books and popular television programs and invited readers to identify them. What I want is to see how many books/movies/television show that can be named with the following hook:
Young kid(s) with little or no family ties leave/s everything behind to attempt a quest, discovering purpose, power and family on the way.I can think of at least 6 book series by glancing at our bookshelf. You?
Compulsive Story Disorder
Do you empathize with Calvin when the Mrs. Wormwood ends the Spaceman Spiff-ery?
Do you ask questions and listen for answers?
Do you play video games to advance the storyline well after you are tired of the gameplay?
Do you ever imagine scenarios involving the people in the elevator with you?
Do you lose hours at a time fooling around with half a page of dialogue?
Do you make up names for people who don't exist?
If so, you may have the same fictitious psychosomatic chemical abnormality as many famous authors, poets, and generational tale-keepers. Compulsive story disorder. It sounds nearly as horrifying as it is.
